In Metropolis, Fernanda Canales is presented as part of a new generation of internationally recognized Mexican women architects, through a selection of projects that explore the role of public architecture in border communities. The publication highlights the Border Library and Public Park in Agua Prieta, the Border Overlook and Market Plaza, and the Encinos Sports Center in Naco, Sonora, all developed for SEDATU. The projects make use of local materials, shade, and open spaces to create places for gathering, recreation, and refuge within the desert landscape. Beyond addressing basic needs, these interventions create new civic spaces for communities accustomed to moving between the two countries, proposing an architecture that not only allows people to cross the border, but also to stay and forge connections with the place.
